- Model Science Software
Model Science is developing simulation software for use in education. ChemLab for Windows is their current product for chemistry. It's a real-time 2-D simulation of a chemistry lab in which the user interacts with animated lab equipment, similar to lab work. Each lab simulation is contained in a separate simulation module, thus many different labs are possible using the common lab interface. A free version of ChemLab with Fractional Crystallization lab is available at this site.

Moviemol is a program for visualization and animation of molecular structures for SGI and IBM RISC/6000 workstations and for PCs running DOS (or Linux, but only a beta version exists that unfortunately does not work properly). Moviemol typically takes sets of molecular coordinates and displays each of these sets or frames one after the other to create a "movie".
Pointers to mass spectrometer freeware available on the Internet, plus a collection of tools for use by the mass spectrometer user including a periodic chart with graphic hyperlinks to charts with exact masses and isotopic abundances of the elements, mass spec calibration data, etc.

The Point Group Tutorial is a multimedia program designed to help students identify symmetry elements and assign point groups to molecules. The program includes example molecules for each point group and an interactive tutorial based on the traditional flow-chart method for assigning point groups. Polychem is an interactive, multi-topic multimedia chemistry textbook for use by years 11 and 12 to junior college. A functional demo is available for download.

RasMol is free molecular visualization software, great for small molecules but is especially amazing for macromolecules (proteins, DNA, RNA) or macromolecular assemblies (viruses, lipid bilayers). This site provides the software itself, a gallery of images produced by RasMol, educational scripts (movies) for projection in lectures or for self-study, links to class web sites which employ RasMol, and to other free molecular visualization software. Kinetica98 Beta download and instructions page; a rough beta version of a kinetics simulation program based on the Hichem FORTRAN program developed at NBS (now NIST) and kindly provided by Professor R. Hanrahan. It allows simulations of mechanisms (i.e., concentrations/pressures vs. time) to be run as well as the fitting of experimental data to a mechanism by a simplex optimization of the rate constants.

- xyz2rgb - a tool for animating molecules
xyz2rgb makes pretty pictures and movies of molecules. It expects input in the form of an XYZ file, one of the file formats frequently used by computational chemists. As output, it produces one or more line-interlaced RGB files. These can be converted to other formats using the ImageMagick image processing toolkit. Conversion between a wide variety of molecule file formats can be accomplished using a program called Babel. The source code in C, which is free, can be downloaded from this site.
